Liszt was not one of Artur Rubinstein's specialties; aside from these pieces (on mono recordings, 1950-55) I believe he recorded only the Sonata and Piano Concerto No. 1. Damned if I know why. He plays the music here, a well- chosen program alternating showpieces with lyrical works, with the flair of a born Lisztianer. I particularly enjoyed the rhythmic freedom of the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 12, a nicely musical performance that doesn't forget the fireworks. And there's a nice bonus: three pieces by Anton Rubinstein (no relation) reissued for the first time since a very scarce 45 EP. --Leslie Gerber
