"Well, this is the Pointer Sisters' album that was released right after "Break Out". It's a great album and it is hard to decide which is better, "Break Out" or "Contact". Surprisingly, this album is out-of-print and extremely underrated. DON'T FORGET this album did go platinum! Anyway, about the music. Let's take a look song by song.



1. "Twist My Arm"-Great song with high energy. It's easy to hear Ruth's deep vocals in the refrain, (If you wanna hold it, If you wanna show it...). Very danceable! Anita has lead vocal (#83 pop)

2. "Hey You"-A different kind for the Pointer Sisters. They don't usually sing about the world. That is the topic of this song. The melody is simple but it grows on you eventually! Ruth has lead vocal.

3. "Pound, Pound, Pound"-Highly synthesized here! Great rhythms with the synthesizers. Great vocals and more high energy! Very catchy also! June has lead vocal.

4. "Back In My Arms"-A great love-power ballad. As the melody repeats at the end you can just see this being performed live in your head. A highlight of the entire album! Ruth has lead vocal.

5. "Burn Down The Night"-Interesting bass and synthesizer rhythms. This song sounds more like a freestyle dance than their usual new wave style. Still a great song! Anita has lead vocal.

6. "Bodies And Souls"-Catchy rhythms here! Very danceable and an interesting melody. June gives this song a lot of energy through her energetic vocals. You can tell the sisters have fun with this one. June has lead vocal.

7. "Contact"-The pounding synth-bass rhythm here is all this song needed to take it to the top! Again, lots of synthesizers. Great energetic vocals again. Ruth has lead vocal.

8. "Dare Me"-The biggest commercial hit of the album. This was a #1 song on Billboard's Hot Dance/Club Music playlist and it was deserved to be. The synthesizers seem to just come in during random parts this song. A great song! June has lead vocal. (#11 pop)

9. "Freedom"-A wonderful way to end a Pointer Sisters album here! A relaxing ballad with great instrumentals. The synth-solo at about 2:17 in the song is just beautiful. Anita has lead vocal. (#59 pop)



Overall, this album has a lot of freestyle dancing, an 80's R&B sound, and a lot of sythesizers! Give this album a listen and you will be happy you did!

"The drum machines are in full blast on CONTACT, the follow-up to BREAKOUT , the album that was multi-platinum for the Pointer Sisters. With that success, producer Richard Perry loaded this album with dance tracks, which is in my opinion, just a bit too much overdoing it. I do love TWIST MY ARM, the opening cut, which is a rocking dance song . I remember the video being aired on MTV, a very fun & colorful video with the Pointers really having fun with it - just as much fun as the song actually is. Can't understand why this single wasn't a big smash. The big hit off this album is DARE ME - one of their best singles with June in control , plus some great lyrics & Latin percussion on this now classic. The third single off this FREEDOM , is a beautiful ballad with socially conscious lyrics, sung exquisitely by Anita. An edited version was the 2nd single released from CONTACT, but it didn't chart that high, and kind of doomed their hit single status from then on.



Ruth, Anita & June each get 3 lead vocals - equitable since there are 9 songs total. Ruth's songs are the best : HEY YOU, CONTACT and the awesome BACK IN MY ARMS. This song had a video for it, and it's on their SO EXCITED VHS/DVD , so I'm suprised that it was not released as a single. Too bad because it's that good, and certainly should have been the single released after DARE ME. It's filled with swirling strings, great lyrics, a memorable melody, and Ruth's heart -sung lead. It was written and co-produced by the band MR. MISTER , who were also on RCA Records .



The only thing I didn't much care for are the pounding inane dance song POUND POUND POUND which is basically empty lyrically & musically. BURN DOWN THE NIGHT is okay if a bit generic. BODIES AND SOULS has some nice percussion and June's strong vocals. It's a pretty good album overall, but not up to par with the template it was modeled on : the amazing BREAKOUT. Certainly, any Pointer Sisters fan will love most of these songs."
