This ain't your typical blues album--after all, most blues albums don't include the following notice: "This compact disc will sound best at loud volumes!" And indeed it does. The New York-based Popa Chubby is a dangerous man around a guitar, and if one could imagine what a bluesman who used to back up punk poets might sound like, one would end up with Popa Chubby. He's got a solid, steady guitar style and songwriting capabilities that span blues, R&B, and rock & roll, occasionally showing his roots in the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. If there's a weakness here, it's that the music is occasionally a bit repetitive, making some songs seem longer than they really are; and Chubby's cover of "The Wind Cries Mary," while solid, doesn't leave a lasting impression. Still, rock-steady tracks like "Shakedown," "Rats Get Whacked," and "Transformation" have definite appeal and pack a hefty punch. --Genevieve Williams

"I heard him live at the REX in Lorsch, Germany I loved the Brooklyn Basement Blues Album at first, and now I love it even more. He told us, he's the king of New York Blues, and he's right. Youve' got some great musicians over there."

"I have to admit, for years I passed up Popa Chubby albums before I finally broke down and bought this one used. Now I own all of them. The first album I saw was "one Million Broken Guitars", I would look at this fat (and yes, kinda' ugly) guy covered in tatoos on the cover and think to myself, "what is this?,... some kind of rap'n'blues garbage?,... or maybe this guy is just screamer who turns his amp up really loud so you can't tell how bad his playing is?".Well, I couldn't have been more wrong. Popa Chubby is a talented musician and song writer. He moves from hard rockers to slightly twisted (but FUN!) ballads such as 'Her name was Evil' and 'Rats get Whacked'. Granted, not every song is a winner; 'Looking Back' is just plain awful, but most of them are well worth listening to: fast and clear guitar playing, decent vocals and sometimes great lyrics.If you haven't tried a "Chubby" yet, start with "Brooklyn Basement Blues" or "Booty and the Beast". If your taste runs a little more towards hard rock, "Gas Money" would also be a good choice.As for the reviewer who commented that "you should stick with Dave Hole..."; I have all of Dave Holes' albums so far, but if his next album doesn't show a little more depth, I won't buy it. Except for "Ticket to Chicago" (a great album) and arguably "Short Fuse Blues" (a very good album), his stuff all sounds the same - LOUD SLIDE GUITAR dominates everything else. You can't hear any of the notes because they're so distorted, and his voice is barely adequate (especially on his last album).If that's what you like, great. But if you want to be able to hear the music and the lyrics, and be able to tell one song from another; with a mix of fast and slow, easy and hard, serious blues and a little tongue-in-cheek,... then give Chubby a try."
