Synopsis

Album Description
Pope Jane's "Relief" is dripping liquid rock with a funky groove. Album number two from the all female alterna-pop three piece, "Relief" delivers to your gut without having to growl! "...Raw and outstanding, with more subliminal earcandy than a Pink Floyd album!" --Jennifer Keiser, RUN RUN Magazine "..You guys kicked some a** up there..." --Joan Jett and the Blackhearts "Nice set. Great songs." --Ann Wilson, Heart "NONE of you girls do crank?!!" --unnamed Barmaid, Clyde's "... Egnew's voice is sometimes ethereal, sometimes ferocious...Hoagland's bass lines weave and balance the sometimes blistering vocals and drums...and drummer Coyner lays down a succulent textural rhythmic bed." --Jaqueline Johnson, The Billings Gazette "Relief is exactly that-- a welcome arrival from the three incrdible women who brought us Pope Jane. If you care about musical integrity but still want to have fun, look no farther than Relief." --Rodney Bishop, Shellout Quarterly

(5 out of 5 stars)

"If listening to an album can make an otherwise very calm 32 year-old German woman dance in her apartment so wildly that she sprains her ankle, it must be pretty darn groovy, don't you think? Well, this is what happened when I was listening to Pope Jane's "Relief" the other day. Though I am not one to use superlatives, I can honestly say that this CD contains some of the most superb songwriting, performing, and producing I have heard. Attempting to compare Pope Jane's musical style to other bands would be a futile activity, as this is one unique blend of funky rhythms, highly addictive melodies, soulful vocals, and intelligent lyrics. The album's most outstanding feature is Danielle Egnew's vocal performance, which is as versatile as the songs she writes. Listen to "Change is Random (Gun Song)" or "Loopholes", a song about running into god, and you'll want to nominate Egnew not only for a Grammy, but also for an Academy Award, as you will be amazed by her vocal 'acting'. From smart pop tunes like "Rain" to ballads like "Great Big Shoes" and edgy rock songs such as "Stupid", this well-crafted album is thoroughly enjoyable and gets better with every listening. Just be careful not to sprain your ankle."
