Synopsis
Amazon.com In 1964, his first hit 10 years behind him, Porter Wagoner returned to his Ozark hometown, West Plains, Missouri, to play for the folks who'd literally been his family, friends, and neighbors. The down-home results (actually the better part of two concerts presented as one show) are a twangy, charming time capsule, capturing what country sounded like when it was still played in high school auditoriums and VFW halls. Besides Wagoner's poignant and plain-spoken readings of his own hits and old-timey standards, we get the whole revue: fiery instrumental spotlights; solo offerings from Wagoner's wonderful pre-Dolly "girl singer," Pretty Miss Norma Jean; and the corny-yet-hilarious comedy of bass player/comic Speck Rhodes. All of it is as entertaining and fast-paced as a Saturday evening in town. --David Cantwell |
CD ReviewsClassic Cory L. Schwent | Bloomsdale, MO United States | 06/20/2002 (4 out of 5 stars) "This CD is a reissue of a very overlooked LP. The sound is as clear as a bell. If you want to hear what a live Porter Wagoner show from the 60's sounded like, this cd is for you. Plenty of hits and plenty of Pretty Miss Norma Jean. Get this before it goes out of print. The insert features a short essay by Rich Kienzle." Excellent Cory L. Schwent | 11/23/1998 (5 out of 5 stars) "This album is what country music is all about. Or at least what it used to be about. This album is 34 years old and still sounds great. Let's see if in 34 years anyone is still interested in Garth etc."
