"This recording of selections from Schein's Banchetto Musicale is excellent in every respect. The music itself is always tuneful and engaging, but it is the performance by Savall and his colleagues that makes this recording such a delight. The use of stings and winds in opposition and in consort make for some lovely sonorities. I know that Savall was critisized in Early Music many years ago for using viols instead of violins in these suites for historic reasons, but from an aesthetic viewpoint, I love the robust, reedy tone of the viols. There is also much inventive ornamentation throughout. My only regret, and it has nothing to do with the performance itself, is that only 5 of the suites from Banchetto Musicale are included. Actually, 4 of the suites are taken from another of Schein's collections; Venus Krantzlein. If only Hesperion XX had undertaken a complete cycle of Schein's instrumental music, there would so much more of this great repetoire to enjoy. As an aside, anyone seeking a similar recording by Hesperion XX should seek out their recording of suites by Andreas Hammmershmidt, taken from his collection Erster Fleiss (Ars Musici AM 1170-2)"
Superlative performance - suave, elegant and precise.

"This performance is truly a "musical banquet" of lively, lyrical dances beautifully executed by Savall and his musicians. Outstanding ornamentation by the first violin and cornetto. Thoughtfully orchestrated. Highly recommended."
