A Tribute to George Pretre and Poulenc
D. A Wend | Buffalo Grove, IL USA | 02/20/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This disc is a tribute to conductor Georges Pretre issued in 2004, and what better way to celebrate his career than a disc of the music of Francis Poulenc, who was a friend of the conductor.

I was especially excited when I saw this disc as it has the complete version of Francis Poulenc's Les Biches. I had this recording on LP and always hoped it would appear on CD. Les Biches is usually performed in a suite that the composer put together; here we have all 9 sections of the ballet complete with chorus. The ballet was commissioned by Diaghilev in 1924 and revolves around a group of pleasure-living flappers. The music has some of Poulenc's most tuneful and engaging melodies and it has never been better performed than by Georges Pretre and the Philharmonic Orchestra. This CD also includes the Pastourelle - Poulenc's contribution to L'Eventail de Jeanne - and a magnificent recording of the Aubade. The Aubade, subtitled a Choreographic concerto for piano and 18 instruments, was commissioned in 1929 as a private entertainment by the Vicomte and Vicomtesse de Noailles and has an extensive piano part that qualifies it as a piano concerto.

The final work is the ballet Les Animaux modeles (The Model Animals), after the fables of La Fontaine, first performed in 1942. The setting for the ballet is a farmyard and has different people and animal interactions. The ballet suite has title that describe that action: Le Petit Jour evokes a scene of peasants setting out to the fields; in Le Lion amoureux a bad-boy lion makes love to a girl; Les Deux Coqs depicts two fighting birds with their group of clucking hens with staccato music representing the clucking. The music for Les Animaux is lush with melodies and sounds quite close to a Hollywood soundtrack to a romantic film.

This disc is well-filled at 78:12 and the music was nicely digitally re-mastered. If you are a fan of Georges Pretre and the music of Francis Poulenc you will want to add this disc to your collection.
