Synopsis

Prince Paul has already proved himself as one of the best producers in hip-hop (De La Soul, Cypress Hill, Dr. Octagon, Chris Rock). Psychoanalysis proves he's also totally ill. (Er, that's a good thing.) The disc is more of a producer's sketchbook than a reliable album and is composed of scratches and skits mingled around a bizarro-world mimicking of nearly every style of urban music you can imagine, from Miami Bass ("Booty Clap"), Delta Blues ("The Bitch Blues"), and R&B ("You Made Me"). Tracks like "Beautiful Night" are so deeply twisted that it might take repeated listenings before you're in on the joke. Psychoanalysis feels familiar all the way through but is also deliberately alien, perhaps recorded just so Prince Paul can imagine the expression on your face during playback. --Todd Levin

CD Reviews

I know "they don't understand it", so what!

"As in the case with "Prince amongst Thieves", Prince Paul has made another important album\cd which will problably be ignored largely. This is testament not to the music and content of this work but due to the fact that much of american taste is derermined by the Lowest Common Denominator(lcd). Our music is awash in songs about cellphones, beepers,'ho's,weed, guns, and general low life subjects that make no mention of just how irrelavent this all is. Prince Paul deals with hate, depression, homicidal maniac's, and that's just to name a few of the characters that inhabit this world. Guest appearences by Dan the automater and kool keith round out what is one of the best cd's to come along, in a long time in any era."
I'm a changed person forever.

"Whoa. this album is up there. way up beyond the stars and planets. I have to say Prince Paul is one of the most talented(and sickest) producers out. Period. If you don't have this album and you wanna here some real funny and twisted stuff, get this album now. After listening to this track by track, I finally realized how crazy Prince P. is. It's kinda like an autobiography, i guess. More like a trip in the brain of Prince Paul. Please buy this album."

"My jaw dropped repeatedly while listening to this album, even though I had been warned that Prince Paul wasn't serious about everything. Hooks like "it's a beautiful night for a date-rape/it's a beautiful night for a kill," made me hurt myself laughing, while the parody of Schooly D's "PSK: What Does It Mean?" has become my current favorite song. This album is [messed] up from start to finish, and deserves your attention."
