"As far as concept records go, this is one of the best I've ever heard. It should not be dismissed because of the spiritual overtones because that is really nothing new for Prince. He's been making spiritual references in his music since 1981's Controversy; but most only pay attention to his other preoccupation; sex.



But as for this work, the music is great,and as usual he melds all musical types throughout with a easy mid-tempo jazzy groove to start, R&B, hard rock, JB funk, and everything in between. What's interesting is the narrative that flows throughout the piece; he tells the story of the rainbow children through a slowed down voice track that sounds eerie at first but as the cd progresses, the voice morphs into what sounds like an old wise & weary man that's reading from a sacred text. Each track is referred to as a chapter, so the metaphor is powerful & great.



I recommend this one to anyone that is a Prince fan, as well as anyone that knows music can be used to tell stories as well as be used to simply dance to."
