This CD might stand as a cross section of Prokofiev's styles and output. The Classical Symphony is just that--a nice, easy-to-take work composed in a self-consciously 18th century manner which is here given a wonderfully airy reading. The Suite from The Love for Three Oranges finds the composer at his most angular and witty, and Temirkanov and crew offer a wry, pointed reading, rich in detail. Romeo and Juliet gives us a fusion of Prokofiev's compositional bag: it is exquisitely lyrical in the love moments and when depicting Friar Lawrence, bawdy and dissonant in fight scenes or those dealing with Romeo's friends, and simply energetically danceable elsewhere. This music is in the orchestra's blood and the performances have the whiff of authority about them. A fine release. --Robert Levine

Demonstration-quality sound and a great Romeo and Juliet Sui

"Oh, if only Temirkanov had been allowed by RCA to conduct the complete Romeo and Juliet ballet! His reading of Suite #2 is half an hour of the most sublime music-amking. And thanks to Tony Faulkner, the now legendary British digital engineer who went to St. Petersburg in 1991 to record this CD, the sound is incredibly fresh, warm, and natural. There are other sonic blockbuster versions of Romeo and Juliet excerpts, notably by Salonen and Abbado, both with the Berlin Phil., but they sound bombastic compared to this marvelous disc. Temirkanov's conducting soars beyond their efforts, also.

The rest is less significant, a middle-of-the-road Classical Sym. and a sharp, satisfying Love for Three Oranges Suite. It's the Romeo and Juliet that is so stunning; one of a kind in the current catalog."
