"Out of all the recordings of this work I have listened to (Freni, Tebaldi, even Maria Callas) none have captured the innocence and growth and hearbreak of Butterfly like Scotto. This first full recording of Scotto's interpretation is a truly legendary performance. Her development from young, innocent geisha to mature woman full of heartache and longing is not only dramatically perfect, but vocally beautiful and poignant. The her masterful artistry is untouched by anyone. Callas had the drama, but the vocalism was never this flawless. The final scene will bring you to tears every time. Bergonzi is a great Pinkerton to her butterfly. Don't waste time on any other recording except this one. You'll never want another after this."
