CD Reviews

Hitting the nail on the head

"It's a shame that so few people have heard of Puller. Sure, you could continue living a happy life without knowing this band ever existed, but you'd be missing out on some fine rock and roll. I didn't think this album could top "Closer Than You Think", but after just one listen, I knew Puller had hit a homerun. There are only ten songs here, but each one is memorable and stands alone. The melodies are pure pop, but there's lots of guitar driven ROCK here too. This is definitely a radio friendly album (although radio will never touch it), and is quite a departure from the post-hardcore of Puller's early work. Songs like "First to Have" are very catchy and incorporate acousic guitars without losing that rock edge. Highly recommended."
The final Puller

"Puller is one of those bands that no one has never heard of, and sadly most people will never hear their music. Puller's final release - "What's Mine at Twilight" is, in my humble opinion, a hidden treasure (to say the very least). For fans of Michael Lewis, For Love Not Lisa, and Puller, this record should totally be an amazing treat.

Puller always was a band searching for an identity and a place in the music world. Their albums never really had much consistency from one record to the next and I do not think that was intentional. To me it's great when a band will expand their sound, experiment, and step into new territory. That's not what I think that Mike Lewis was trying to do with Puller, I think it was a constant struggle for the band to keep it together. I really thought that "Closer Than You Think" was the sound the band was going for, but Michael Lewis hits you with a curve ball with "What's Mine at Twilight".

Puller went from the more ambient open-sound to a more simple and poppy sound that is not only easier to listen to but very catchy on "What's Mine at Twilight". I'm not saying that Puller "found their sound" on this record, but what they did was put together an amazing and passionate set of songs as possibly a last ditch effort for some sort of success. But This album is 10 really solid, if not fantastic songs.

Maybe it was where I was in my personal life at the time, but this album really hit me hard when it came out. It is really hard for me to explain but initially just listening to songs like "she's the girl", "first to have", "man on the move", and the amazing "if she's the one" made me very emotional. To say that the music struck me as honest, beautiful, powerful, and special would be a total understatement. In fact I remember being moved to tears the first time I ever listened to this album. It wasn't a religious thing, it was an emotional thing. There has always been something about Michael Lewis' voice that touches me, despite barely ever being able to understand his lyrics or what they are about. "What's mine at Twilight" is a lot more open in a lyrical sense and the songs are a lot easier to relate to in comparison to songs like "wishing".

Again, I can not explain exactly how I felt or feel about this album. I just know that at the time when it came out it felt like Michael Lewis knew what I was going through in my life and put it all to songs.....and great, well written, catchy ones. "What's Mine at Twilight" was there for me through some really emotional times.

Two songs that are the best are "first to have" and "if she's the one", and the other 8 songs are not far behind these two.

I am really proud of the work Michael Lewis and Miles did with Puller and For Love Not Lisa and I really really encourage anyone who is open minded to check out both of those bands. I am so grateful that I was lucky enough to be exposed to Puller and "What's Mine at Twilight" in particular is a special album that I truly cherish."
