Synopsis

Album Description
2008 release, a collection from the Brazilian female vocal quartet, the last truly great undiscovered vocal group of the '60s. Often compared to The Mamas & Papas, Free Design, The Association and Harper's Bizarre, Quarteto Em Cy were born during the Bossa Nova boom instead of the Folk-Rock/Sunshine Pop era. They recorded the seminal album Os Afros Sambas with Vinicius and Baden Powell. They also worked with Joao Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Marcos Valle and others. Centerpiece of this set is the 1965 album they recorded with the male Brazilian vocal group Tama Trio under the auspices of arranger Luiz Eca. It is a masterpiece. El.

Amazingly beautiful

"Quarteto Em Cy - wow - this is mid sixties' bossa nova with three or four part harmonies, and is just incredible. These women's voices (sisters, I think), blend beautifully and the vocal arrangements are great. The latter part of the cd is from a session with the Tamba Trio, who were slightly experimental in their own right; having only a trio behind them musically the vocals take center stage, and the trio's leanings definitely pull the Quartet into interesting territory. Not avant garde, but just more thoughtful, and really, more emotional. For anyone who loves bossa nova beyond the purely sentimental - hearing these vast harmonies really - well - woosh! Definitely give it a listen.

"This beauty fused choral music and bossa nova, two big sounds in the mid-60s.

To call this light jazz would be a bit of a slight. It actually is by jazz standards, but this music has a lot of subtance. The bossa groove makes drives the music forward and the vocals are breezy--Quartto Em Cy swing!

Put in context, this music uses elemements from 1960s easy listening but is actually far from it. Listen to other choral music from the era, and you'll know, these guys were some of the hippest cats out there.

Delicious."
