Rock N' Roll never dies
Doc | Western New York | 07/08/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"In an age when homogenized drivel fills the airwaves and clogs the charts, a dose of real, honest rock n' roll like The Quireboys "Homewreckers and Heartbreakers" is a blast of fresh air.

The highlights? The haunting melody of "Mona Lisa Smiled," which is a classic tale of love lost... the rowdy "I Love This Dirty Town," a rocker in the vein of "7 O'Clock"...the upbeat romp "One for the Road"... the longing ballad "Late Nite Saturday Call."

Vocalist Spike Gray and guitarist Guy Griffin are a songwriting team in league with Jagger/Richards in a bygone era. They've been crafting The Quireboys sound for about two decades now and "Homewreckers and Heartbreakers" is an album that ranks with their finest. The sound is familiar, yet fresh... a dose of solid blues-based rock.

Spike's voice is in fine form - raspy as ever, but with a smooth, mellow edge at times and Griffin and Paul Guerin prove to be a fine guitar team. Keith Weir's keyboards give the songs an extra dynamic while new bassist Jimi Crutchley joins drummer Pip Mailing in laying down a solid groove.

Rock N' Roll - real, honest rock - will never die as long as there are bands like The Quireboys to carry the flag."
