"These preludes have to be taken with a grain of salt. There is as much here to like as to dislike. Fior makes these sound like Liszt, or a russian ravel, though at times I would rather have these come out like bullets rather than pearls. There are the occasional missed notes, but only idiots cant get beyond that, this is an odd, though authentic and valid view, no matter how strange. The gems here are the lyrical ones which, due more to the recording, come across hazy and impressionistic, appealingly so. In the more demanding ones, Fior lets his fingers fly, and I cant think of the last time I heard op 23 5's chords played so fast, yet so under control in terms of dynamics-they arent pounded out, they are played subtely and always under control.
For fans of FIor and pianism in general, this is recommended, but for those wanting a complete recording of Rach's preludes--get Weissenberg's on RCA-the most consistently exciting and powerful and lyrical version ever-there may be better version of single preludes-Moiseiwitsch op 32.10--Richter for basically any of them--Gilels, horowitz, rach himself-but for them all--get Weissenberg, you'll never need another. Recent DDD versions that are good are Hayroudinoff on Chandos(I think) they are good but not as good as Weisse."
