Fischer goes deeper into this often-abused score than anyone I know of, and reveals it as an incisive masterwork rather than a vehicle for wallowing in lush sonorities and hammy emoting. It's apparent even from the phrasing in the opening bars that this is special--one of those recordings that sets a new standard in the music it represents. This conductor/orchestra partnership is not one you would normally associate with a Russian composer, but so much for preconceived notions."
