Non-essential Kirk

(3 out of 5 stars)
"This album was recorded in 1956 but because of bad promotion, it was forgotten and "Introducing Roland Kirk" was considered his first. Kirk's albums from the early 60's on encompass several jazz styles, though this album is primarily bop-oriented. At this time, Kirk was making his living playing R&B and several tracks have that honking, 50's rock `n' roll sound. I took one star off because the music on this CD, good as it is, doesn't sound much like his later work and is therefore not essential. Another star was taken off for the short length (under 30 min.). Recommended for Kirk completists and perhaps hard-core bop fans."
