CD ReviewsRevolution alexander laurence | Los Angeles, CA | 10/19/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "The Rakes are the most exciting band to come out of England this year. They are funky. They rock. They are odd and quirky. The songs are about every day experience. "Retreat" hits you in the face with its sheer force. This is an inventive band. "Strasbourg" is a more conventional punk song, but the subject matter is like a detective novel. "Dark Clouds" sounds more like Franz Ferdinand. Their best song here is "22 Grand Job." It is all about working in the city. It has an amazing guitar riff. It shows The Rakes at their best. Really fresh and energetic. There is a new track, not on the album, "Something Clicked and I fell Off The Edge" which sounds like the first Joy Division album, with a sense of humor. Then we get a dancey version of "Retreat (Phones Remix). These are six solid songs from The Rakes. They will take over very soon.
