Ramesh Shotham, born in Madras, is one of the few Indian percussionists with a very high profile in original Indian classical music (performing regularly with the Karnataka College of Percussion) as well as pop and jazz music (recording and performing with Steve Coleman, Steve Swallow, Carla Bley and Charlie Mariano). His group, Madras Special, is well known as a crossover project that ignores the boundaries between Indian music and jazz.
