"I became aware of Ran Blake after discovering the older recordings of my favourite female vocalist Jeanne Lee. Her debut in the sixties "the newest sound around" is a collaboration with Ran Blake; who is, like Mal Waldron, a pianist who is sparing on his notes. The way Ran Blake plays allows a listener to concentrate on individual notes; the way he plays it, either loud or soft with emphasis or not and fast or slow. I really like to sit down on my Gravity chair and challenge my ears with it.
