Synopsis
Product Description If critical raves drove the record charts, Randy Weeks would rightfully be top of the pops. Consider some of the evidence: "An amazing songwriter" (Salon.com), "Smart songwriting and a broad palette of pop music influences" (CD Now), "Melody and rhythm that dare you not to dance" (Billboard), "Amazing musician" (Billboard). If you don't already know (and love) the music of Randy Weeks, his latest release, Sugarfinger, is a fine place to start getting aquainted with an artist who is bound to become a personal favorite. It's a disc that combines the stylistic breadth and ear appeal of classic AM Radio with the lyrical depth and musical imagination that marked the progressive FM radio of the early '70s, yet plays with a contemporary elan that impeccably suits the times we live in. Produced by Jamie Candiloro, known for his work with R.E.M., Ryan Adams and others, it's an album with just about everything a listener might want: sharp lyrics that make both darkness and light utterly palpable, music that grooves as well as glistens with imaginative touches, seductive hooks and vocals by Weeks that are both sweet and yet edgy, as well as irresistibly sincere and emotive. Weeks is backed by a stellar band which includes artists-in-their-own-right Tony Gilkyson and Mike Stinson. Similarly Requested CDs

CD ReviewsIt doesn't get better than this. Bt | Parts unknown | 08/26/2006 (5 out of 5 stars) "I've tried reviewing this, and Randy's fantastic "Sold Out at the Cinema", and for some reason they won't post; let's hope this one does. This guy's one of the best songwriters in the business today. His brand of rootsy, pop/rock is filled with intelligent lyrics, and hooks galore. Much was written about Lucinda recording his song "Can't let go" from his debut disc but his last two releases have been just as good, if not better. The only problem is there's not much press generated since he went to a smaller label. This guy's part of an excellent core of musicians (Mike Stinson, the best authentic country singer out today, Dave Knudson, Kip Boardman, and Tony Gilkyson) making the scene in California, and these brothers should be checked out by anyone who likes honest music." Subaru Lee Armstrong | Winterville, NC United States | 02/18/2007 (4 out of 5 stars) "Randy Weeks' new CD is an impressive work. My two favorite tracks include "I'll Take My Candy" with its cowbell percussion & Danny McGough's organ pumping, "I'm telling jokes; you're lighting up another smoke; I look out my window, but there ain't no view." "Fu Manchu" is an excellent track with its insistent beat and its high-octane bounce per ounce, "She's seen enough of your disposition, all of your obsessions & your superstitions; She's seen enough of your limousines, your stuck-up friends & their amphetamines. You might as well be in a Subaru; she's had enough of that fu manchu." The other tracks are also strong. The opener "Looking for a Good Time" has Weeks' gentle voice singing to an unhappy girl. "Transistor Radio" has his trademark bounce as the guitars chime & build, "There's a slippery road that I seem to find; It leads me to myself; I keep on trying." The set closes with the acoustic lament, "If You Don't Take the Medicine." Randy Weeks has a voice that is gentle & expressive, even if it might not have placed him as a finalist on American Idol. However, it polishes his song craft and makes "Sugarfinger" an excellent CD. Enjoy!"
