Synopsis

Album Description
The Fania label has found a new way to celebrate the masterpiece Salsa albums of all time by inaugurating Masterwork a series of remastered classic albums with additional material like unreleased songs and session tapes. To start the new series, Fania chose Indestructible, the pivotal album by Ray Barretto. At the time of this recording, five of his musicians had just left his band. In turn, Barretto put together a new rhythm section and added vocalist,Tito Allen. Ray attracted good jazz chops, like trumpeter Manny Durán, pianist Eddie Martínez and flautist Artie Webb. He intended to make an "indestructible" comeback with a more sophisticated sound. The result was a masterpiece. Tito Allen sings several driving, in-your-face, uptempo tunes such as "Llanto De Cocodrilo," "Indestructible" and "El Hijo De Obatalá". For the Masterworks version, Fania added five additional tracks, including an incomplete early take on "Ay No" as well as a 1976 live version of that song. It also includes an instrumental jazzy take on the Bolero "Yo Tengo Un Amor" and a previously unreleased track, "Jazz Guajira." These last tracks are jewels that give us a glimpse to the more jazzy direction that Barretto was headed with his new band. Indestructible is a hard-hitting, straight-up, no-nonsense Ray Barretto Salsa release from a golden period of Latin music

CD Reviews

An all-time Salsa classic reissued with bonus tracks.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"1973 was a year of decision for the late great Ray Barretto. A large part of his original band (including the great singer Adalberto Santiago) defected to form Tipica 73 and many wondered if Barretto would rebound. To everyone's surprise he did and "Indestructible" went on to become the biggest-selling LP of his career up to that point. Of course, you get the undisputed classics "El Hijo De Obatala", "Ay No", "El Diablo", "La Orquesta" and the hit title track but this Fania Masterworks edition includes alternate takes of "Ay No", "Yo Tengo Un Amor" and a previously-unreleased instrumental--all with sound quality so INCREDIBLY CLEAN and crisp it must be heard to be believed. Get it now if you don't yet have it!!!"
