"This was Ray's first Pablo album under his own name, a studio date done in 1976 with a trio (George Duvivier [bs] Grady Tate [d]). Everyone plays well and there are numerous highlights. I don't know what the girls are talking about in GIRL TALK, but it's some groovy, funky talk going on, and if it's about a guy, he's one lucky guy. Duvivier also takes a nice bass solo on that one. HOLD BACK MON is a light, airy Bryant tune that has a wonderful day-in-the-park feel about it. Bryant has a terrific way of inflicting the deepest blues feelings into his ballad playing, a la on GOOD MORNING HEARTACHE and LI'L DARLIN'. COLD TURKEY, another composition by Ray, is an up-tempo swinger with a JUMPIN' WITH SYMPHONY SID-like theme to it - a most attractive piece. Ray does some marvelous tension-building things on MANTECA, especially behind the bass and drum solos. But to my ears the best tune on the disc is PRAYER SONG, which is a combination of church music and soul that starts out swinging delicately but builds in power. It's a terrific song played beautifully. Modern piano trio fans will surely dig this CD."
