CD Reviews

One of the best conniff recordings
big ears | MA USA | 08/12/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

""memories are made of this" rightfully deserves its reputation as one of conniff's most exquisitely arranged recordings. the selections are mini masterpieces, and the members of this ensemble are some of the top-notch studio musicians of their day. in addition to billy butterfield's rich and sassy trumpet, we hear a young doc severinsen's bright stratospheric horn. the songs for this recording truly do bring back memories of the 50's, but conniff translates them into way-better-than-the-original renditions.

this recording is a MUST for anyone who loves the conniff sound. one of his very finest."

"I love this cd, I listened it when I was a child, and I was very impressed with this collection of great songs, don't forget that this album was a gold record; beggining with the title song MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS, the beautiful TAMMY, the great THREE COINS IN THE FOUNTAIN, the lovely NO OTHER LOVE, the Elvis's hit LOVE ME TENDER, the Platters' ONLY YOU (what a wonderful threatment of the song) and ending with great surprises like YOUNG LOVE and AROUND THE WORLD... SIMPLY RAY CONNIFF!!"

"Memories Are Made of This is an excellent Ray Conniff album showcasing his artistry combining that superlative chorus and music. The musical numbers on this album are all winners; there's not a dud in the bunch! The quality of the sound is excellent and I like that artwork as well.

The CD begins with the title track, "Memories Are Made of This;" and how's about that brass? The singers use their voices as finely tuned instruments to add extra color to this piece and it all holds its own very well. "Tammy" is very easy on the ear; and I really like the very classic "Young Love." "Young Love" gets the royal treatment from the chorus and the band; and that's terrific.

"Three Coins in the Fountain" has a dynamic arrangement with the horns carrying quite a bit of the melody; and this works wonders for the number. "Moments to Remember" is also quite well done; what fine easy listening music this is! In addition, there are more gems in "My Foolish Heart" with the brass and those harmonizing singers; the most beautiful "Love Me Tender;" "Around the World" with still more of that wonderful Ray Conniff sound; a charming rendition of "Love Letters in the Sand" that features the chorus and those musicians outdoing even themselves.

"Unchained Melody" uses the brass, percussion and more to carry the musical arrangement while the singers harmonize flawlessly; and "Only You (And You Alone)" charms me with its natural beauty. The CD ends with a sublime treatment of "No Other Love" that leaves me wanting more--which is the reason, of course, why I hit the replay button on my CD player when this finishes so I can listen all over again!

Ray Conniff possessed great genius and his ability to mold a chorus with a fine musical arrangement proved he was and always be one of the very best. I highly recommend this album for Ray Conniff fans; and people who enjoy easy listening music from the mid 20th century will not be disappointed. This is also a fine starter CD for anyone just beginning to appreciate the artistry of the great Ray Conniff."
