A Classic big band recording
08/23/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Thank heaven Eddie Sauter got the chance to stretch out and write for the Ray McKinley Band of the late '40's. Otherwise, big band lovers might never have been treated to some of the best big band writing (and playing) ever. Anyone aspiring to be a jazz music writer should listen to anything Sauter has ever written. He is one of my favorites, if not my favorite writer. This music was the prelude to the innovative Sauter-Finegan Orchestra of the 1950's. Sauter's writing was never easy to play and required a lot of rehearsal time by the excellent musicians. But the fruits of their labor are well worth hearing and BORDERLINE is a classic CD that should not be missed."
