"This collection of material from Ray Stevens is a re-packaged release of a couple of CD's from 2005 and 2004 but this time offered in one big mammoth collection. This is a second chance to purchase a lot of Ray's songs that are long out of print in physical CD format. The material can be bought on-line if one is inclined to do so but you end up paying 99 cents for each song and on this collection there are well over 50 songs!
In 2005 Collectibles Records released three CD's on Ray. Each CD consisted of two complete albums from the 1970's:
Everything Is Beautiful + Unreal;
Nashville + Boogity-Boogity;
Turn Your Radio On + Misty.
Those CD's were hard to come by in 2005 and were not publicized much and now three years later they are being re-released along side a 2004 CD called THE LAST LAUGH all in one 4-CD collection.
The good news for those who want original recordings...everything is original, not re-recordings. I prefer not type a track list because as I mentioned the number of songs on this collection is staggering. It would be best if one were to look up each individual CD here on Amazon if one wants to refresh themselves with what song is on which album. "Everything Is Beautiful" and "Unreal" were originally issued in 1970. "Turn Your Radio On" was issued in 1972. "Nashville" was issued in 1973. "Boogity-Boogity" was issued in 1974. "Misty" was issued in 1975. "The Last Laugh" is a compilation that was released in 1999 and re-released in 2004 and it's being re-re-released here in 2008 as part of this ONLY THE BEST OF RAY STEVENS collection.
The quirky thing about including a compilation CD alongside six album's worth of songs is that you will have this 4th CD featuring five out of ten hit singles that were already covered on the previous 3 CD's.
The five tracks on THE LAST LAUGH that aren't featured on the other 3 in this collection are "Unwind" and "Mr Businessman" both from 1968, "Gitarzan" and "Along Came Jones" from 1969, and "Shriner's Convention", from 1980.
Some of the songs that are stand-outs to me, not including the obvious hit songs, are: "Come Around", "Leaving on a Jet Plane", "Lady of Spain", "Smith and Jones", "Glory Special", "Get Together", "Imitation of Life", "Talking", Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head", "Monkey See, Monkey Do", "Islands", "Cow Cow Boogie", "Heart Transplant", "Love Me Longer", "Float", "Oh Lonesome Me", "Deep Purple", "Destroyed", "A Brighter Day", "Something", "A Time For Us", and so many others. Everything is a stand-out come to think of it."
