CD Reviews

A great CD with many new, funny songs.

"This CD is a great example of Stevens' hillarious music. The songs are new and, of course, funny, just like many of his other songs. Overall, it's a great CD!"
40 years and still going strong

"when this CD came out, Ray was in the midst of his 40th Anniversary as a recording artist. this CD is hilarious and a little bittersweet. Carl Perkins passed away a few months after Ray asked him to help re-write "Daddy Sang Bass" (the Johnny Cash classic) but have it "Mama Sang Bass", which would tell the story of a church couple who had a problem: Daddy sang like a woman and Mama sang like a man and no matter how many hormone injections they took, Mama would always sing bass. Ray plays the falsetto "Daddy" while J.D. Sumner plays the deep voiced "Mama"...it would only be a couple months before Sumner passed away! i have the episode of Primetime Country on tape that shows J.D. in a blonde curly wig in the role of "Mama"! it's hilarious.Ray has always written or recorded songs that deal with current events. on this CD, the Apollo-13 movie is satired on "Virgil and the Moonshot" while that old favorite JAWS gets spoofed on "Too Drunk To Fish". Ray honors the town where he first found fame on "I'll Be In Atlanta" while the outrageous "She Loves Elvis Better Than Me" and "It Ain't Over Till It's Over" are quirky love songs. Ray at one time carried on a feud with next door neighbor Webb Pierce that spilled over into the courts. one can't help but think of ol' Webb when Ray belts out the lament, "My Neighbor". The CD goes out on a typical high note on the satire of the airline industry, "How Much Does It Cost To Fly To Albuquerque?". the CD's title comes from a what if? what if Whistler's mother got tired of whistling? well, she would simply hum it...that's how the CD got it's title."
