CD ReviewsThis band was amazing A. Lund | 07/28/2006 (5 out of 5 stars) "I have to say that i am one picky bastard when it comes to punk and hardcore. First time I heard Really Red was the "New Strings for Old Puppets" 7". Absolutely astonishing. So far ahead of its time and ahead of every band from their genre. This album is the perfect primer on RR but then you will want more... and you will have to pay top dollar because these records are RARE. Buy this CD. If you like early 80s punk at all but want something that breaks away from the crowd, this is it." Criminally overlooked Punk classic!!! Brewzerr | On the fault line, CA | 02/22/2006 (5 out of 5 stars) "I grew up in the 70's and 80's in Houston, and I used to see these guys play quite a bit in the early 80's. They were without a doubt Houston's best punk band, and quite possibly the best in Texas. They galvanized a local scene which at the time was very strong and full of great bands, colorful characters, and wild cathartic energy. Those days are my greatest memories ever and they'll never be matched. If it weren't for Really Red I seriously doubt those days would have had the intensity that they did. Ronnie Bond (U-Ron Bondage to those reading the liner notes) put his heart and soul willingly into making things happen in the Houston punk scene... not just with the band, but through his record label (C.I.A.), his "Funhouse" radio show on KPFT, his extremely cool record store (Real Records), and nonstop dedication to supporting all things local. This perhaps is why RR is so overlooked in punk/hardcore history. Had they been like so many other punk/core bands of their time and focused on the road and getting out of Houston more often (like for example, D.R.I.), more people outside of Harris county would have gotten to experience what I did, and I have no doubt that they would have been just as integral as bands like Black Flag, D.O.A., Dead Kennedys, Big Boys etc. Instead they focused their efforts more on making things happen in their hometown (a very thankless job). Today, sadly enough... even most Houstonians don't even remember 'em. Not a surprise either, since most of the old punks there (the ones who are still alive at least) have long ago moved to other places. Even the ex-members of RR themselves live very far away from the lone star state today. Well at least Empty was respectful enough to get this classic album reissued. Hopefully enough of these kids who have been getting into the older bands will bite at this and find out what most of the world has been missing out on for the last 25 years. Long live Really Red!!!" Listen to this and you will be astonished!!! Carlos Arauz-pacheco | 12/25/2004 (5 out of 5 stars) "really red were one of the coolest totally overlooked early 80s hardcore bands. whether they considered themselves hardcore or not they totally brought themselves to and beyond the limits of the style and genre. in my opinion they had a kind of element that fear also brought on their "the record" musically, but some real politcal lyrics that even if you disagreed with them its still such great music. this album is a classic of its time and sadly very few people know about them. those who have taken the time to hear and love really red can say "They were political without getting annoying or tiring." which is very true, really red could have been gods in the underground world, but like u-ron bondage said in the liner notes of their "near complete discography"(on angy neighbor records) cd they totally didnt need to, they didnt care. being from texas i'm so proud of the music this band created, but i sooo wish i coudlve been around to see them live or something.
they were also friends with two as excelent groups mydolls and culturcide." |
