Few have burst onto the Christian music scene with such raw honesty and edgy appeal as Rebecca St. James. With 1996's God, this young Australian went from unknown to spokesperson for a generation. The title track, along with the irresistible "Me Without You" and "Go and Sin No More," were all CCM No. 1 hits. And rightfully so! The title track uniquely alternates a pastoral melody with acoustic guitar and flute while St. James belts out the chorus with urgency and desire. Musically, the rest features moody atmospherics, hook-laden guitar riffs, and St. James's nontraditional yet strong vocals. An artist worth paying attention to, St. James could easily take her place among the Lilith Fair crowd with little apology for her message. --Michael Lyttle

CD Reviews

One of my favorite albums - Christian or not
DWD | Indianapolis, IN | 06/10/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I listen to both Christian and non-Christian rock and this album is one of the best albums I own and is, without question, Rebecca St. James' best effort to date.

There are 11 tracks on the album (Track 10 is extended and contains a 'hidden' track) and all but 2 are exceptional. The lyrics are well-crafted, uplifted and powerful. The music goes hand-in-hand - paired perfectly to give the lyrics the most impact. From time to time, when I'm feeling low, this album is a great pick-me-up and a reminder about the wonders of God, faith and forgiveness."
I'm 42 & enjoy this album

"Rebecca St. James is a brilliant song writer incorporating sound doctrine. She uses her strong voice in a definite rock sound of praise of God and what a Christian should strive to do for their Savior.

God by Rebecca St. James & Teddy T

A song about what God has created and who God is. Then with a question why should he take us as His children.

Scripture Psalm 8:3-4 When I look at thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars which thou hast established;
what is man that thou art mindful of him, and the son of man that thou dost care for him? (Psalms 8:3-4 RSV)
Your the Voice by M. Ryder, A. Quinta & C Thompson

This song is about spreading the Gospel. The message is the least clear of the whole album. That Christians are the voice of God in telling about God's plan for salvation. But how are men to call upon him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without a preacher? (Romans 10:14 RSV)
You Then Me by Bob Halligan jr. and Graham Shaw

Put God first, serve others. Challenge for Christians to overcome selfishness.
But they were silent; for on the way they had discussed with one another who was the greatest. And he sat down and called the twelve; and he said to them, "If any one would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all."
(Mark 9:34-35 RSV)
Speak to Me by Rebecca St. James, Josh Deaton & Teddy T

To prepare your heart to serve God. To listen and obey God. It is a plead to have God direct you.

And the LORD came and stood forth, calling as at other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for thy servant hears." (1 Samuel 3:10 RSV)
Not to be confused with the song titled Here I Am on Rebecca St. James first Album. That song is also about volunteering to serve God and have God prepare one's heart.
And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" Then I said, "Here am I! Send me." (Isaiah 6:8 RSV)
Abba Father by Rebeca St. James,Tedd T & Otto Rrice

Only by following God can a Christian truly soar For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
(Romans 8:5 RSV) For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the spirit of sonship. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" it is the Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
(Romans 8:15-16 RSV)
Me Without You by Martin Briley
What is a person without God. The song compares us to other things without its essential part. This song does not mention God or Jesus. It is the Abba Father song that gives song following a spiritual meaning. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If a man does not abide in me, he is cast forth as a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned. (John 15:5-6 RSV)
That's What matters by Rebecca St. James & Teddy T
Things in this world do not really count. Your relationship with God is what counts. The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil. (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 RSV)
Carry Me High by Rebecca St. James, Tedd T & Michael Anderson

Willing to separate, different then unbelievers. It is about being uncomfortable and willing to be punished for serving God.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If it be so, our God whom we serve is able todeliver us from the burning fiery furnace; and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image which you have set up." (Daniel 3:16-18 RSV)
A Cold Heart Turns by Rebecca St. James
When I hear the song I hear the sadness about not heeding God's message. In the comments with the CD she comments about the sadness of not remembering what God has done. (Psalms 95:7 )
Go Sin No More by Rebecca St. James, Todd T & Michael Anderson

This is the first song I heard of hers on the Radio. I loved the music, but I did not want to believe the lyrics: Go Sin no More. But if one claims to be sorry for their behavior, one must also mean to go away from such behavior - Repent- an about face of ones behavior.
When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. (John 8:10-12 AV)
Psalm 139 By Rebecca St, James

An Melancholy sounding song. One must wait after quite a pause after Go Sin No More. The Song is about the inescapable presence of God."
