Synopsis

Product Description
"Ranger Motel", the new release from the Red Dirt Rangers delivers the close-to-the-earth blend of acoustic and electric music that typifies Red Dirt. It should be noted that this was the final disc recorded at Tulsa's legendary Church Studio by Steve Ripley, leader of the multi-platinum selling group The Tractors. If "Ranger Motel" sounds at times like the Great Lost Sir Douglas Quintet album that's because it features keyboardist Augie Meyers, a key architect of Sir Doug's sound. "Ranger Motel" isn't just the best disc the Red Dirt Rangers have ever made, it's a living an vibrant snapshot of what Red Dirt music is all about - its past, its present, and its future.

CD Reviews

Blast from the past... and as up-to-date as 30 seconds ago
J. Holder | Bryan, TX | 09/21/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"To be honest, I'm something of a newcomer both to this band and to what's being called 'red dirt music' these days in general. But I grew up in San Antonio long enough ago to fondly remember the happy hippie pulse of Doug & Augie's proto-Tejano sound. Lo and behold, the tie-dyed redneck spirit lives in this wonderful collection of songs! Just try to listen to 'Spice & Sugar, 'Lavena' or, of course, the Rangers' tribute to Sir Doug, 'Psychedelic Cowboy' without kicking back in a 60s-Texas haze. It helps, of course, that the Rangers recruited Augie Meyers himself to add Mendocino-ish magic to this great album.

But wait - there's more. Can there be such a thing as Taoist country music? Why, yes: 'Enjoy the Ride' will lower your blood pressure and clear your head, even as your foot starts tapping along. And if you've ever played in a band and had to serve as your own roadie, 'Stillwater' will sound too damn familiar.

If you like good music from ANY genre... and especially if you like and miss the spirit of the original 'outlaw country' that started bubbling up from Texas and Oklahoma decades ago... check into 'Ranger Motel.' Olé!"
