CD Reviews

RIPOFF WITH A CAPITAL 'R'!!!
Johnny Boy | Hockessin, DE | 04/17/2010
(1 out of 5 stars)

"The Red Hot Chili Peppers changed the alternative rock style forever. Fusing funk, rap, and some heavy metal influences into their new alternative style, the band are among the most influential of all-time. These guys have been around since the early 1980s, and they are still making music, even today.

A couple of years ago, I reviewed the Peppers' installment in the 'Ten Best Series' and gave it five stars and praised it. Boy do I regret that review now. So, I'm rereviewing it and giving it a one-star review, something it rightly deserves. This is a collection of their early years on the Capitol label, 1984-1989, perhaps my favorite period. So why am I giving it one star, you may ask? Well, read on.

This album is a reissue of the 1996/97 (can't remember the exact date, but during that time period) of the 'Ten Best Series' disc. What an awful compilation this is! Everything here is worthy of a million-stars, don't get me wrong, but it's just the fashion that they issued this.

Shame on Capitol/EMI for releasing this when all of the songs ALREADY APPEARED ON THE 'What Hits!?' disc from a few years earlier, along with eight (that's right, EIGHT) additional songs, including their massive 1991 hit, 'Under the Bridge.'

So why was this necessary? 'What Hits!?' came out in 1992; 'Ten Best Series' came out in 1997. Five year difference, and yet, the 1992 disc is so superior to this disc it's not funny. This disc is a ripoff in the worst possible way. It's absolutely shameful that Capitol has the audacity to release these, and then RERELEASE them with different artwork. I find it disrespectful to an incredible extreme to all artists. Not only the Peppers, but to the Beach Boys, Billy Squier, Manfred Mann, George Clinton and every other artist who has had an installment in this lame, el-cheapo series that proves how money hungry the folks at EMI really are.

Overall, buy 'What Hits!?.' Buy 'Greatest Hits.' Buy the studio albums. ANYTHING but this. This is a pathetic and lame attempt to milk the RHCPs name on Capitol's part. Stay far, far, far away from this album.

NOT RECOMMENDED."
