CD ReviewsA FRUITFUL PARTNERSHIP Barry McCanna | Normandy, France | 01/14/2009 (4 out of 5 stars) "There are many examples of jazz musicians who became partners in creativity, for example, Bix and Tram, Venuti and Lang, Reinhardt and Grappelli. And in the same breath you'd have to include Red Nichols and Miff Mole, who teamed up in 1925 by which time both were well-established on the New York jazz scene. This compilation covers a period of five years, from their 1925 juxtaposition in Ross Gorman's pit orchestra through their three best-known studio groups (Miff Moler & his Molers, Red Nichols & his Five Pennies, and the Charleston Chasers). These are classic recordings, which include the cream of New York's session musicians, including Jimmy Dorsey, Pee Wee Russell, Adrian Rollini, Wingy Manone, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and Eddie Lang. When this was issued in 1988 sixteen tracks was the norm, whereas CDs have stretched since to 80 minutes. Were I reviewing it then it would merit 5 stars, and only drops to four by virtue of its comparative brevity, but that should not deter you from purchasing it if you get the chance." Red and Miff--Two of the Giants of Jazz Dr. Robert Hackler | Orlando, Fl. USA | 01/24/2008 (5 out of 5 stars) "This CD captures two of the giants of jazz, setting the stage for small group combos to follow. Playing tunes identified with the Original Dixieland Jazz Band ("Darktown Strutters Ball"), Bix Beiderbecke ("Davenport Blues") and others, Red and Miff present some of the cleanest and most stimulating jazz of the '20's-30's. Red, whose life is documented in the movie "The Five Pennies" ,was along with Bix and Louie Armstrong one of the three great horns and Miff, a master of the tailgate recorded with his own band and many others. This CD would be a much treasured addition to any jazz collection!"
