Monster was a deviation from the ordinary R.E.M. sound. With rumbling guitar riffs reminiscent of the days of yore (circa Document), the opening single blasts you into the mood of the album. Gems such as Star 69 and Crush with Eyeliner are scattered throughout. It just takes a little while for it to grow on you, as with most all of their music.

I read a review in a British Music magazine "Monster is grounded in the crackle of glam rock".
