"Renato Zero dressed like a glam rocker and his music reminded me of Bowie. This is a brilliant compilation of the Italian artist's 1970s work. There is not one dud amongst these beautiful ballads, catchy pop songs and gripping rock numbers. My favorites include Paleobarattolo with its echo-effect, the lilting ballad Nell' Archivio Della Mia Coscienza and Tu Che Sei Mio Fratello.
From the classic 1976 album Zerofobia there are soulful slow songs like Il Cielo, Vivo and Mi Vendo, fast rockers like Morire Qui, the addictive power pop of the evocative Sgualdrina and the punk-rock of Manichini with its great guitar riffs. The omission of L'Ambulanza from this album is a pity.
The 1978 album Zerolandia provides the tuneful and melancholy pop song La Favola Mia, the soaring Triangolo, the funky Sesso O Esse and Uomo No with its outstanding piano and sax. I miss Amaro Madely from this album, an unforgettable cabaret style track that should have been included.
The elegiac Il Carrozzone, a song of defiance against the reality of death, Periferia with its complex arrangement and lovely keyboards, Grattacieli Di Sale with is varied tempo and the tender pop ballad Arrendermi Mai come from the 1979 album EroZero.
Although I lost track of Zero's career somewhere in the 1980s, this compilation reminds me of the profundity and variety of his early music, and of what a great performer he was. He had the flair for infusing rock and pop with the natural Italian affinity for the popular song, creating a seamless blend of music that has not aged in any way.
