"Recently I decided to explore the work of some Italian composers who were unknown to me and chanced upon a wonderful disk of Menotti's violin concerto conducted by Richard Hickox; that purchase has now been followed up by a beautiful offering from Sergio Rendine of his freshly composed symphonies dating from 2006 and 2007.
The project was urged upon Rendine by the conductor Marzio Conti and the results are magnificent. Notable episodes (it's difficult to isolate them) are the development of the second symphonies first movement and the achingly beautiful, sweetly sad adagio that unfolds the folk melodies of the Andorrana region, borne aloft by solo violin. The allegros are full of renaissance colour and folk dance vitality while the lingering aural after taste of the first adagio is one of sensuous refinement.
It's great to hear symphonic form come back to life with such a marvellous Italian inflection. Highly recommended!
