"I have collected recordings of the two Rheinberger organ concerti ever since E. Power Biggs made his landmark debut recording of both works back in 1972, which, sadly, was never released on compact disc. There are currently four versions of the concerti available on compact disc. This is the newest, released in 1999, and, in my opinion, it is the best. The performances are very musical with lots of tempo rubato, very characteristic of late 19th century style and very appropriate to these works. The organ is a huge, colorful historic instrument that is recorded front and center and balanced beautifully with the orchestra. It is listed as a chamber orchestra, but the sound is full and rich with just enough resonance. I have never heard more compelling interpretations of these two concerti, and I was in love with the Biggs version for almost thirty years. The suite is interesting and well played, but lacks the inspiration so abundant in the concerti. If you enjoy these works, grab this cd now. You may want to order an extra to give to a friend. It's that good."
