"Many great jazz artists have recorded, with great success, a live album at the Olympia in Paris while they visited or lived on Paris. Among these greats is Rhoda Scott. Her vast discography on Barclay (today owned by Universal) is more or less still in the master tapes vaults but the "Live At The Olympia" CD, reissued on the Jazz In Paris CD program, is very good pick in the vaults. "Live At The Olympia" CD contains the 2LP's Barclay 920.379/80 from 1971 (unfortunately no bonus tracks). Supporting Scott playing the Hammond B3, the trio are Joe Thomas on flute/tenor saxophone and Cees Kranenburg on drums. Scott has always had great nose for mixing musical genres and tunes on her records, and "Live At The Olympia" is no exception . The trio treats the standards Bluesette", "I Hear Music", "Wade In The Water", "Equinox" and "People" with great musical inventiveness and interplay - they really tells us a new story on known themes! Many highlights but "Li'l Darlin" is still my favourite on this album where Joe Thomas, the saxophonist, shows great flute skills and improv. We know that Scott is a good singer and there's no limitations in that respect on this CD - she start beautifully in French on "Hymne A L'Amour" and ends this CD with another three personal vocal interpretations. It might not be fair to compare musicians head to head, but I can't get the master drummer Kenny Clarke out of my head when listening to Scott on this album (they recorded a numerous albums together) - Kranenburg is trying hard to be the ultimate timekeeper for Scott but his efforts on this album is just a good middle-of-the-road try.
With Jazz In Paris titles at super low budget price, buy the two Scott titles along with Lou Bennett and Eddy Louiss albums, a feel the great Paris jazz organ atmosphere in the `70s!!"
Fabulous!
