Amazon.com Composer and accordionist Richard Galliano owes a lot to Astor Piazzolla. Sure, he's tackled improv-jazz and French musette music, but--at the heart of performances--the tango is never that far away. On Passatori, Galliano pays homage to Piazzolla's classical repertoire (swinging orchestral works that sway from gentle ballads to dizzying tangos) by performing both compositions from the Argentinian master and originals that clearly show his influence. The opening movement to Galliano's three-part Opale Concerto hearkens to Piazzolla's Tango Ballet, but throws even more drama into the fold by its conclusion. On Galliano's "San Peyre," he slows things down for a reflective ballad that is both sensual and moving. Throughout, the Toscana orchestra and Galliano show an impressive versatility. CD ReviewsA title? You want a title? How about spellbinding? 06/26/2000 (5 out of 5 stars) "I didn't know about Galliano before, yes I know it's a shame. Anyway I was looking for albums by Piazolla, and then I stumbled on this treasure. These pieces, in these arrangements, are filled with so much dramatic emotional conflicts and resolutions, that, to me, they evoke layers and layers of visual stimulation. I went to the IMDB to look if Galliano has done any music for movies, and sadly his music is only featured in two films. I hope it's he who refuses because if film makers can't see how big of difference this kind of music genius will do to their films, then they have something loose in their heads. When I play this album, I hate to pause it at any moment because it feels like breaking the flow of emotion, that's how good it is."
