CD Reviews

For the Loosened Liker Of Classical Music
04/07/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Its true you cant please everybody, most people who like classical music would either completely pass this by or snub my revieew because it wasn't 'Culturally Accurate' enough. This album though falls under a section of classical music Im into, along with hard-to-find scores like 'The Burbs'-Jerry Goldsmith and such that Ive collected for years. 'Shroud for a Nightingale'-The Screen Music of Richard Harvey is the only CD or printed music otherwise that you'll find these movie scores...some of which were nominated for and won several awards. Along with John Williams ('Indiana Jones' trilogy), Alan Silvestri ('Back To the Future' trilogy, 'What Lies Beneath'), Jerry Goldsmith ('The Burbs', 'Arabian Nights')..Richard Harvey composed powerfull and trademark musical scores for some of Europes' greater film and tv releases. His style as with others can always be recognized..with finely-tuned choral blasts on top of heart-thumping string sections and a little modern keyboard technology. Two of Harvey's more well-known scores on this CD are the two tracks from the British series 'G.B.H.', on which Harvey performed a fantastic score alongside Elvis Costello. I personally bought this for the 8 minuet score to 'Doomsday Gun' (1994 HBO Original Movie-Frank Langella). The suite, which is the longest on the disc, gives the entire musical talents of Harvey with a soft beginning..not-so extreme vocal parts and a perfect ending. The score was nominated in 1994 for a 'Cable Ace Award', and this is the only place you'll ever find it. I think its unfortunate you cant get this here anymore, pretty much you cant get it anywhere. Hopefully the studio will rerelease someday and these underappreciated talents of music and film will get a better recognition and appreciation."
