Album Description This New York-based singer-songwriter's debut album shows a complex lyrical sensibility backed up by a strong, soulful voice and pop smarts to spare. Though predominantly acoustic, there is a distinct soul/R&B tinge to the arrangements, accentuated by the presence of the legendary Uptown Horns and by the mid-'70s Al Greenisms of the existential love ballad "Move You." Julian's songs are energized by the powerhouse drumming of Mike Shapiro and the fluid acoustic bass lines of Dave Richards; they give a solid foundation to Julian's tales of love, hate and misunderstanding in post-Nixon America. Drawing on the dark poetic imagery of Leonard Cohen ("Bottom Of The Sea") and the graveyard humor of John Prine ("Sick Sick Love"), Julian reaches into the seamy world that lies just beneath the daytime TV talk-show mindset, revealing its underlying truths in all their horror and beauty. From the opening blast of "Sick Sick Love," he shows he can rock out with the bold lyric, "Though he tried his best, she would not be pleased, when it came to promises, she had a deep amnesia ... I was down the street when I heard the noise; He'd used a 38 to illustrate a point; When the coroner came to tell the how and the when, he said no one's to blame, they were already dead." Julian's "Young & Free" was covered on Art Garfunkel's excellent "Everything Waits to Be Noticed" CD. The lovely folk melody floats gracefully above Julian's fluid acoustic guitar, "She's wants to buy the satin shoes; she wants to fly to Baton Rouge." One of my two favorite tracks is "I Ain't Going to Kansas City" with its insistent beat and Julian's vocal a cross between Billy Joel & Tom Waits, "When Max & Dizzy come around lookin for the money, won't you think of something fast, won't you cover for me honey?" The other great musical blast is the rocking "Siberia" with Julian's falsetto vocal, "I am freezing up, freezing inside your love whenever you are near, whenever you are here, I can feel the air in Siberia." Whether Julian is singing about crossing into Canada for "The 4th of July" or swimming down at the "Bottom of the Sea," he creates a magical and deep landscape that is entrancing. This is certainly a gem worth seeking! Bravo!"
