"King Biscuit releases some really excellent concerts from long ago, amd if you're lucky you'll sometimes get something you'd never expect. This is one of those. Rick Derringer & Friends is a show from 1981, a benefit show featuring Ian Hunter, Dr. John, Daryl Hall, Edgar Winters and others all come out to support Derringer who recently had all of his equipment stolen. So on with the show, Derringer opens up with Guitar & Women and right away he sounds amazing. Doing On My Way Up and Party at the Hotel you feel like you're at the party. Rick does a stellar shred guitar solo all throughout Rock N' Roll Hoochie Koo, which is just awesome! I didn't know the guy played guitar like that. Ending his set with Jump,Jump,Jump, the guests come out. First Mott's Ian Hunter does a rousing version of Just Another Night and All The Young Dudes, which contains bits from 3 other Mott tunes. After that Dr. John and Edgar Winter come up to do the jammin', funky Right Place, Wrong Time. It's killer as you know. The finale is Hang On Sloopy, an oldie but a goodie, a jam session for everyone to come back out one last time. The end result being one of the top 5 King Biscuit releases and a truly amazing show."

Some Great Moments......

"This CD has some great moments, but overall, it isn't quite as good as I'd hoped it would be. The first 3 Derringer songs (Guitars & Women, On My Way Up, Party At The Hotel) are great, I especially like On My Way Up. RnR Hoochie Koo, however doesn't equal the old "Derringer live" version, nor do "Let Me In" or "Beyond The Universe". Perhaps that's more a testament to that recording, than a slight on this one. I was thrilled to see Jump,Jump,Jump on here, one of my favorite Derringer songs. The guitar work is GREAT, but the vacals were pretty marginal. Rick's guitar is overall outstanding, the guy can flat play. But the singing is marginal. I suppose the radio broadcast doesn't get the same kind of overdubbing as a formal recording. Regarding the othe material, Ian Hunter's "Just Another Night" really rocks, but "All the Young Dudes (Medley) is just ok (maybe I'm just overexposed to the song). Dr. John's "Right Place Wrong Time" is really funky, has a great feel, but the vocals seem like an afterthought. Seems like he only sings about 3/4 of the words....The finale of Hang On Sloopy has painfully bad back up singing, but the song has enough spirit to hang in there.3 stars may be a bit harsh, probably 3.5 would be better."
Good time rock and roll
