CD ReviewsMostly upbeat traditional country Peter Durward Harris | Leicester England | 08/31/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "At the start of the eighties, just when traditional country seemed to be a thing of the past, Ricky Skaggs proved what an exciting form of music it could be. His first three major label albums (Waitin' for the sun to shine, Highways and heartaches, Don't cheat in our hometown) were exceptional and he continued to maintain a high standard thereafter, of which this one is typical.
The music is generally upbeat with Ricky sometimes using up-tempo music to conceal sad lyrics. If you are looking for mellow music, you won't find much here although there are some slow songs here to provide a contrast with the faster songs that make up most of the album. Perhaps the best of the slow songs is The fields of home, which is a downbeat, reflective song about regret. The big hit here was Loving only me, but there are many other excellent songs here. I particularly like Hummingbird, Let it be you, the title track and He was onto something. If you love traditional country music, you will love listening to Ricky Skaggs. While this album is not as strong as the three albums mentioned earlier but it is an excellent album in its own right, well worth hearing." |
