"Wow, a lot of folks seem upset that Rik Emmett's 1990 solo album Absolutely doesn't sound like Triumph. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that the whole point of a solo career - to play music that's somewhat different from the band you're known for?



Rik Emmett made a name for himself as part of the Canadian power trio Triumph, but left to launch a solo career in 1988. Given the musical landscape at the time, it's not all that surprising that his debut was a more pop-oriented AOR/melodic rock album. Absolutely is a solid album from start to finish, featuring 10 radio-friendly rock songs and one instrumental piece, all of which are led by Emmett's highly proficient guitar work and distinctive voice. The album is very reminiscent of Lou Gramm's post-Foreigner solo albums, though there are a few similarities to some of the more melodic moments from later Triumph albums as well.



Your enjoyment of this album will have a lot to do with your expectations. If you go in expecting to hear a Triumph album, you will be sorely disappointed. If you're expecting a quality pop/rock album from a former Triumph member, chances are you'll be pleased with Absolutely.

"We all know that the only good Triumph songs are Emmett songs. They would have been hits with anyone on bass and guitar. By Surveillance, their sound was stale, and everyone knew Rik needed to do some creative exploration. Absolutely shows Rik's versatility. When I saw his concert open with Stand and Deliver, I knew his time had come. It's a shame American radio won't play his music, but I respect Rik for not selling out and producing his own stuff. I had The Way that You Love Me played at my wedding. Sure, this is pop, but it's great pop."

I can see why Rik had to leave Triumph

"I saw Triumph for the first time on their Allied Forces tour. Rik's performance was jaw dropping. That said, the direction Triumph was going before Rik left, and the songs offered on this CD makes it quite obvious why Rik had to leave. This isn't a Triumph album. Absolutely is Rik's attempt to put the 'ist' back into artist. There's a lot more texture and thought in this CD than anything Triumph released. It's pop AOR, and for that some people might complain. I don't mind though. If an artist can't expand their range and experiment, then they might as well fold up and retire. I glad Rik didn't retire."
