Mirabal artfully uses light synth, didgeridoo, and contemporary rhythms for a sound that carries Native heritage in its arms while walking into the future. As on Song Carrier there are quietly beautiful Native pieces that invite close listening, but unlike Song Carrier, Warrior Magician offers more distinctly shaped melodies and compositions. Highlights include the gently galloping "Warrior Magician," where a flute sings plaintive verses before guitar and drums chime in with tender, pounding rhythms; "Memoir Chaco" with its Native drumming and lovely mystic overtones; and "Corn Dance," where Mirabal, in a kind of "jam," meanders lovingly with wooden flute. "Carrying Native music in it's arms while walking into the future"? Give me a break! I see Native Music AS the future! It doesn't **need** new-age permutations. BUT, if you really go for contemporary Native sounds I recommend R. Carlos Nakai or Robert Tree Cody. If you prefer traditional, try either of the two above or Paul Zimmer. Or attend a pow-wow in your area, many fine "unknown" artists play pow-wows and sell privately released tapes and CDs." It's no good, with too much synthetic material...if you're into his flute playing go for Song Carrier or Native Suite." At work I can listen to instrumental music and Warrior Magician is one my co-workers and I listen to over and over. The tunes run from bold to haunting with the lilt of the flute providing a counter point."
