Album DescriptionInto The Woods, Rodney Brown's latest release on Starsilk Records, captures the heart and soul of Northwestern Ontario in song. Chronicle Journal reviewer Brent Linton calls it "a brilliant celebration of where we live with Rodney Brown at his best". Into the Woods is a richly textured album produced by Ian Tamblyn and recorded with a stellar cast of Ottawa based musicians. The combined musicianship of Ian Tamblyn, Ken Kanwisher, Fred Guignon, James Stephens, Tobias Smith, Peter Van Althen, Bill Rowat and Andrea Karam makes musical magic of Rodney's compositions. His first singer-songwriter recording for adult audiences in more than two decades, the album is a retrospective of Rodney's work showcasing songs written between 1981 and September 2001. It it is firmly rooted in the landscape of Northwestern Ontario; from the celtic feel of Journey's End to the rollicking "Retribution Song" the flavour of "home" permeates the album. The collection takes listeners on a roller coaster ride of emotion ranging from the poignant to the political, with titles including Casualty of War, The Forgotten Ones, Somebody Give Me A Job, Dancing With The Daughters of Radon and Back to Back to The Land. Interwoven throughout the fabric of the album are love songs of every imaginable variety; Loves Changes, The Only One, I'll Never Be Enough For You and So In Love With You. The thirteen songs also traverse a myriad of musical styles ranging from folk, to country to rock and reggae. These stories in song portray the universal struggle faced by individuals while reconciling fleeting youth, changing roles, family relationships and dreams versus realities. Every so often these journeys take us Into the Woods where "The fairy tales, the metaphors The happy endings we long for" await us.
