Synopsis

Amazon.com
At first glance, this album, led by nimble postbop guitarist Rodney Jones, seems like a groove-grinding throwback, concentrating its efforts on chestnuts like "Soul Makossa," "Ain't No Sunshine," and Mal Waldron's beautiful "Soul Eyes." But as the tunes unfurl via a sharp cast--drummer Idris Muhammad, organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, and alto saxophonists Maceo Parker and Arthur Blythe, along with Jones--it becomes clear that the soul-jazz arrangements are simply a guise for some very hot, involved soloing. Muhammad is inspired throughout, bucking and dropping bombs, and Smith rages with suave sass as he massages the grooves with his warm glow. Democratic to the core, "Soul Makossa" finds Jones almost sounding like a sideman, so brief and selfless is his playing. He is practically outdone by Blythe on "One Turnip Green" and "Mobius 3." Even though Jones does not wail with the grit of his compatriots, Soul Manifesto bumps hard and often enough to light fires for barbecues and ballrooms alike. --Ken Micallef

CD Reviews

Idris Muhammad...........................Enough said!!

"If you like classic soul-jazz/boogaloo from the late 60's & early 70's than you're gonna love this. I am a huge fan of cats like Grant Green, Lou Donaldson, Melvin Sparks, Charles Earland, Reuben Wilson, Big John Patton, Boogaloo Joe,Charles Kynard, LONNIE SMITH, IDRIS MUHAMMAD and I am always lookin' for something new that captures that old school feel. Well this funky platter does that hands down. I have said this before, but anything with Idris Muhammad on it grooves and funks like no other. If you're lookin' for more jazz cats playin' homage to the old school funkmasters check out: The Greyboy Allstars, Galactic, oo Soul, Stanton Moore (solo), Robert Walters 20th Congress, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, MMW,....Keepin' the funk alive and strong!!"
I like it plenty.

"Very smooth and groovy to boot! Maceo Parker and Arthur Blyth lay down some sweet sax into the groove bowl mix, giving a smooth taste of jazz and funk that the stomach digs like dark dog bone hunting. unlike this reviews word choices, I highly recomend this album!!! Perfect for background treats or intense exclusive indulgense. Talented humans making great tunes. ENJOY!"
This is another guitar genius with all respect!!!

"This man ain't no joke. Awesome player, I listened him at Sirius
satellite radio station and I went immediately to a CD store and I got Manifesto. It sounds a little bit (Mr. GB the king, George Benson) but Mr. Jones got his unique groove! Well done Mr. Jones!!!
God bless you. PS: Pls. Pay attention to the track nr. 6, is fantastic!!!"
