"It's hard to put a label on this CD by Roger Kellaway, but don't be fooled by the prominent cello in this ensemble: this is jazz that meshes the delightful piano of Kellaway with the sometimes doleful, sometimes uplifting melodies played by the adept cellist, Fred Seykora. As with the cello quartets hosted by Kellaway in early 70's (once available in vinyl on A&M Records), the cello is the centerpiece instrument. It is hard to describe what a cello does to jazz. It is truly unique, and at the same time compelling. Kellaway seems to delight in accompanying the sonority of the cello with brilliant piano riffs. The selections are all melodic, similar to Brubeck. Each member of the ensemble is accomplished without demanding to exhibit his virtuosity with a lengthy solo. This is a group effort, and all selections are polished and oh-so listenable. This all-digital recording is clean and clear. Even if I can't quite categorize it, I can certainly enjoy it again and again. It is a shame that it is currently out of print, but used copies are still available. Get it while you can. Highly recommended."
