CD Reviews

A different Roger Whittaker
Peggy | FPO, AP USA | 05/20/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Roger Whittaker has always been one of my favorite vocalists and I have many of his albums. I came across this one by accident and was fascinated to learn that he had lived in Africa, as did I. I bought it for that reason and was not disappointed. The vocals are what Whittaker fans are accustomed to, but with a different setting. I love this album for the memories it provokes, and for the quality of his singing."
Roger: Truly Evergreen in "Moments"

"(In case you didn't catch on, the review title refers to Roger's cover of Streisand's song "Evergreen.") That's not to say, though, that he hasn't aged; he was 68 when this CD came out, and it's evident that he's older, but his fans won't be disappointed. "Moments" is stacked with great easy listening songs, many of which are translations of his French and German hits, such as the album's openers "Into the Silence," "I'm Not in Love," and "Jenny." My wife castigates me for my frequent renditions of the latter - it's just so catchy. Those who loved songs from his Kenya concept album, like "My Land is Kenya," will enjoy "Stars of Africa" and "Out of Africa." Musically, he returns home with these delightful songs. In "Feather on the Wind," "Serenata Serena," "Wildwood Rose," and "Always Remember," Roger is as good as he's ever been, in vocal stylings and passion for the song he's singing. A couple of songs are not my favourites: the lyrics of "Carnival" are vapid but do manage to evoke the sense of carnival, and the duet called "Light" is not equal to its French counterpart. And I appreciate Roger's sentiments in "Rough and Tumble", although it's not on my top ten. The album ends with a nice acoustic version of "Mexican Whistler," one of his earliest hits. My heartiest recommendation, for any Roger fan, is to pick up this album. It won't disappoint. My fellow Canadians, you're lucky because it's already released in the True North..."
