"I first 'discovered' Roman Candle's The Wee Hours Revue when searching through the bins at a Tower Records' going out of business sale. The guy I was with said he heard it was pretty good. That was one of the greater understatements that year. From that day on that CD has been in heavy rotation, probably receiving well over 100 plays. I have turned on everyone I know to The Wee Hours Revue. I often refer to it as the best unknown album of 2006. I don't know how it is not already in every music collection. Songwriting and musicianship are incredible. Skip's unique vocals and guitar, Logan's deft drumming and Timshel's soulful organ reveal their signature sound while evoking at various times thoughts of Wilco, Neil Young, Ryan Adams, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan and more.
Since this is a revue for the new CD, let me say that ever since I heard the first CD, I've been looking forward to a follow-up. They did not disappoint. I've only had this disc five days since picking it up from the band at their Charlottesville, VA show. The radio-ready songs like Eden Was A Garden and Why Modern Radio IS A-OK are certain to take off and will get people buying this CD. While these songs are worth the price of admission, once you dig a little deeper you'll discover there are other real gems, like One More Road, They Say, I Was A Fool, Starting From Scratch, Sonnet 46, my daughters favorite cut; A Heartbeat, and my contender for best on the CD; Big Light. Be sure to check out the cool Phil Spector like Wall-of-Sound feel to the closing track, Early Aubade.
Roman Candle have an amazing talent that needs to be shared with your friends. If they like a well crafted song, appreciate and want to support genuinely wonderful people making genuine and wonderful music like I do, take them to a live show or buy them copies of both CD's as a present. They will never forget the favor you did for them.
