WAGNER CAMPOS & RODERICK FERGUSON ROMANTIC SONGS FOR CLARINET AND PIANO "Wagner Campos is one of the bright lights of his generation of clarinet performers." Larry Combs, Principal Clarinet, The Chicago Symphony SO... more »UTHPORT records begins its new Southport Classical Series with the release of "Romantic Songs for Clarinet And Piano", featuring Wagner Campos, clarinet and Roderick Ferguson, piano. This digital recording includes the music of Carlos Guastavino, Prokofiev, Debussy and Rachmanioff. The duo setting provides a perfect stage for this mix of melodic, impressionist and modern forms of expression. Wagner Campos, a native of Costa Rica, received his Masters degree from DePaul University in Chicago where he studied with Larry Combs, the principal clarinetist of The Chicago Symphony. Roderick Ferguson, a native of Gadsden, Alabama received his Masters degree from The University of Houston. The concept of this recording and many of the arrangements are attributed to the artist's extensive research and love of the material. In many ways the words romance and melodic are synomous. The intensely warm tone of Wagner Campos works well with Mr. Ferguson's emotionally accurate pianism. The duo becomes one as they explore the last century of classical composition. Of special note is the duo's treatment of Argentinian composer Carlos Guastavino's neo-Romantic masterpiece, Sonata For Clarinet And Piano. Guastavino's knowledge of the classical period rivals Stravinsky. For the past 22 years Southport Records has recorded and produced new music from Chicago for the world. This digital recording features the Baldwin SD-10 9'concert grand piano and all vintage Neumann and AKG tube microphones. "Romantic Songs for Clarinet And Piano" is the first in a new series of Classical audiophile recordings from Chicago, a series that will continue to explore rare musical treasures and introduce living composers to a world market.« less
